Co-expression of CD133+/CD44+in human colon cancer and liver metastasis
2013
Although relatively good therapeutic results are achieved in non-advanced cancer, the prognosis of the advanced colon cancer still remains poor, dependent on local or distant recurrence of the disease. One of the factors responsible for recurrence is supposed to be cancer stem cells (CSCs) or tumor-initiating cells, which are a population of cancer cells with ability to perpetuate themselves through self-renewal and to generate differentiated cells, thought to be responsible for tumor recurrence. This study globally approach the possible role of tissue-derived stem cells in the initiation of colon cancer and its metastatic process in the liver. Fresh surgical specimens from colon cancer, no…
Biomarkers for vascular ageing in aorta tissues and blood samples.
2019
Abstract Objectives Functional and quantitative alterations and senescence of circulating and expanded endothelial progenitor cells (EPC), as well as systemic and tissue modifications of angiogenetic and inflammatory molecules, were evaluated for predicting age-related vessel wall remodeling, correlating them to intima media thickness (IMT) in the common carotid artery (CCA), a biomarker of early cardiovascular disease and aortic root dilation. Populations and methods A homogenous Caucasian population was included in the study, constituted by 160 healthy subjects (80 old subjects, mean age 72 ± 6.4, range 66–83 years; and 80 younger blood donors, mean age 26.2 ± 3.4, range 21–33 years), and…
Double Negative (CD19+IgG+IgD-CD27-) B Lymphocytes: A New Insight from Telomerase in Healthy Elderly, in Centenarian Offspring, and in Alzheimer’s Di…
2014
Background: We have previously reported the increase of IgD-CD27- (Double Negative, DN) B cell population in the aged. These memory B cells have short telomeres and poor abilities to proliferate in vitro. Here, we investigated whether the low ability of DN B cells to proliferate depends on the expression levels of the CD307d and CD22 inhibitory receptors or whether DN B cells can proliferate and reactivate telomerase by the engagement of both innate and adaptive immune receptors. Methods: Phenotypic analyses were made by using flow cytometry. Quantitative analysis of telomerase activity was made by using a TRAP and a photometric enzyme immunoassay in young, healthy elderly, centenarian offs…
Somatic stem cells and tissue engineering shed light on unsolved clinical issues in reproductive medicine: in stem cells we trust
2012
Three experts in regenerative medicine explore the evidence and expanding future clinical applicability of the human ovarian and endometrial stem cell population, and tissue engineering of reproductive organs and tissues.
The relation between tumor cell proliferation and vascularization in differentiated and undifferentiated colon carcinomas in the rat.
1982
Tumor cell proliferation and tumor vascularization were investigated in differentiated and undifferentiated colon carcinomas of the rat. The following results were found: 1, in both tumor types, vascularization is developed equally well; 2, both in the differentiated and in the undifferentiated carcinomas, the number of proliferating tumor cells decreases with increasing distance from the capillaries; at a distance of about 80 microns, there is no longer any noteworthy tumor cell proliferation; 3, the differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas differ both in the level of the mitosis index and 3H-thymidine labeling index as well as in their local proliferation pattern despite equal vascu…
Ovarian stimulation does not influence the uterine immune environment in healthy infertile women.
2019
Abstract Research question There is some controversy regarding the impact of ovarian stimulation on immune cells in women undergoing IVF. The study's aim was to determine whether ovarian stimulation affected immune uterine cells in healthy women undergoing IVF. Design This prospective cohort study included 28 patients undergoing IVF and 47 healthy oocyte donors. Endometrial biopsies were taken in a natural cycle and after ovarian stimulation. All participants had a normal karyotype, pelvic ultrasound and cervical cytology results and thyroid-stimulating hormone concentration, as well as normal glucose and insulin concentrations and inherited and acquired thrombophilia test results. Screenin…
